【摘要】:TheDirectoryprovidesthedirectorycapabilitiesrequiredbyOSIapplications,OSImanagementprocesses,otherOSIlayerentities,andtelecommunicationsservices.Amongthecapabilitieswhichitprovidesarethoseof"user-friendlynaming",wherebyobjectscanbereferredtobynameswhicharesuitableforcitingbyhumanusers(thoughnotallobjectsneedhaveuser-friendlynames);and"name-to-addressmapping"whichallowsthebindingbetweenobjectsandtheirlocationstobedynamic.ThelattercapabilityallowsOSInetworks,forexample,tobe"self-configuring"inthesensethataddition,removalandthechangesofobjectlocationdonotaffectOSInetworkoperation.TheDirectoryisnotintendedtobeageneral-purposedatabasesystem,althoughitmaybebuiltonsuchsystems.Itisassumed,forinstance,that,asistypicalwithcommunicationsdirectories,thereisaconsiderablyhigherfrequencyof"queries"thanofupdates.Therateofupdatesisexpectedtobegovernedbythedynamicsofpeopleandorganizations,ratherthan,forexample,thedynamicsofnetworks.Thereisalsononeedforinstantaneousglobalcommitmentofupdates;transientconditions,wherebotholdandnewversionsofthesameinformationareavailable,arequiteacceptable.ItisacharacteristicoftheDirectorythat,exceptasaconsequenceofdifferingaccessrightsorunpropagatedupdates,theresultsofdirectoryquerieswillnotbedependentontheidentityorlocationoftheinquirer.ThischaracteristicrenderstheDirectoryunsuitableforsometelecommunicationsapplications,forexamplesometypesofrouting.Forcaseswheretheresultsaredependentontheidentityoftheinquirer,accesstodirectoryinformationandupdatesoftheDirectorymaybedenied.
